Babblekey turns your voice into text on your own computer, without an account, and what you say stays there unless you use an AI mode. This policy says what Babblekey and its website keep, and why. "We" and "us" are Babblekey, the business that makes it, as in the license agreement.

1. What Babblekey keeps on your computer

Babblekey listens to your microphone only while you're dictating, from when you hold or press its hotkey until you let go or press it again. It turns what you say into text on your computer and doesn't send the sound anywhere.

Babblekey keeps these on your computer, and doesn't send them anywhere:

  • Your settings, such as the hotkey, the speech model and the AI provider you picked, with its API key.
  • Your words and replacements, which help it spell names and terms your way.
  • Your history of recent dictations, so text that didn't paste isn't lost.
  • The speech models it uses, which it downloads the first time you need one.
  • The free trial: when it started, and the latest time Babblekey has seen. Babblekey signs it with an ID that macOS or Windows gives your computer, so it only counts on the computer it started on. The ID isn't kept with it or sent anywhere.
  • The log, which helps track down problems. It notes when Babblekey starts and its version, when dictation starts and stops, its checks for updates and what they found, the trial, and anything that goes wrong, but never what you say or type. Once it's over about 1 MB, Babblekey starts a new one and keeps only the one before.

The log is at ~/Library/Logs/Babblekey.log on a Mac and %LOCALAPPDATA%\Babblekey\Babblekey.log on Windows, and the rest is in ~/Library/Application Support/Babblekey on a Mac and %APPDATA%\Babblekey on Windows, with a second copy of the free trial where macOS or Windows keeps Babblekey's settings. None of it leaves your computer unless you send it to us yourself, such as the log when you ask for help.

Babblekey asks for the microphone, to hear you while you dictate, and on a Mac for Accessibility too, to hear its hotkey in any app and to put the text in where your cursor is. It watches the keyboard only for its hotkey, and doesn't look at your screen or your files, or note what you type.

2. What Babblekey sends over the internet

Dictating needs no internet connection. Babblekey contacts only:

  • The AI provider you choose, and only when you use a mode that needs one. Babblekey sends the text of that dictation and the mode's instructions straight from your computer to that provider, with your own API key, and nothing goes through us. It never sends your voice. The provider's own privacy policy covers what it does with the text. With a provider on your own computer, such as Ollama, the text doesn't leave it.
  • Where the speech models come from, to download one the first time you need it.
  • Our update server at updates.babblekey.com, a minute after Babblekey starts and every six hours after that, to check for updates and download them. Each check says which version you have, with a random ID made when Babblekey was installed, which lets an update go out to some computers before others. Like any website, the server sees your IP address. We don't keep a record of the checks.

That's all. Babblekey has no analytics, crash reports, ads or tracking, and the free trial sends nothing, since it's kept on your computer.

3. The website

This website has no analytics, ads or tracking, and sets no cookies of its own. Everything its pages show, fonts included, comes from the site itself.

  • Cloudflare hosts the site, the downloads and the update server for us. Like any host, it sees your IP address and what you ask for, to send it to you and to keep the site safe from attacks. It shows us totals, such as how many visits and downloads there were and from which countries, but not who they were from. Its privacy policy covers the rest.
  • The waitlist. If you join it, we keep your email address and when you joined, in storage Cloudflare runs for us, to email you once, when Babblekey is out, and for nothing else. We share it only with the email service we send that email with, and delete the list once it's sent. To leave the list before then, email us.
  • Light or dark. If you pick one with the button at the top, your browser remembers it. It stays in your browser.

4. When you email us

If you email us, we keep your message, your address and anything you send with it, such as your log, to answer you and help with what you asked. We keep them only for as long as we need them for that.

5. How long it's kept

  • We keep emails only for as long as we need them to help you.
  • We keep the waitlist until we've emailed it that Babblekey is out, and then delete it.
  • Cloudflare keeps what it collects for as long as its own policy says.
  • What Babblekey keeps on your computer stays there until you delete it.

6. Your rights

What Babblekey keeps on your computer is yours to delete at any time. You can ask us what we have about you, and ask us to correct it, send you a copy or delete it, and we'll answer within a month.

Depending on where you live, such as in the EU or the UK, you may have other rights over your data too, such as to object to how we use it or to complain to your data protection authority. Nothing in this policy takes them away.

7. Changes

We'll post any change to this policy on this page, with its date. Before you can buy Babblekey, before it sends more over the internet than section 2 says, and before the site has analytics of its own, this policy will say what that shares, and with whom.
